Dr. Sandipta Chakraborty

Assistant Professor

Dr. Sandipta Chakraborty is a Preventive Medicine and Public Health Specialist with over 17 years of extensive experience, bridging grassroots fieldwork, academic research, and health care administration and management.

Following his MBBS from NRS Medical College, Kolkata, under the University of Calcutta, Dr. Chakraborty dedicated eight years to gaining diverse, experiential learning of health, beyond the education of medicine. His work spanned the full spectrum of healthcare settings, from remote villages and urban slums to high-end tertiary care hospitals. During this time, he served in ICMR-NICED (presently ICMR-NIRBI), NACO Regional Institute-East, National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), Blood and Marrow transplant Unit and Intensive Care Unit in Private Hospitals, state Public Health and Administrative Service, managed a remote PHC, a health block in the hilly region of West Bengal, and contributed to HIV surveillance across eastern India and in public health research and training.

After an academic break (for pursuing MPH), he joined international NGOs and experience working in projects on HIV, TB, and Hepatitis with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Manipur, especially in the Indo-Myanmar border region and the Bihar Technical Support Unit of CARE. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he played a significant role in functioning COVID testing laboratories and reporting systems at AIIMS Rishikesh, during his brief tenure as a Junior Resident (Academic) under the department of Microbiology.

To complement this extensive field experience, Dr. Chakraborty pursued advanced academic qualifications. He earned an MPH from the Institute of Public Health, Kalyani, under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences followed by an MD in Community Medicine from the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Southeast Asia's oldest public health school. He has further honed his expertise with specialized distance learning programs, including Clinical HIV Management from the University of Washington and research methodology from the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He has also published research articles in National and International journals, received the Indian Journal of Community Medicine (IJCM) B K Mahajan Award 2024 and multiple conference awards for presenting his research.

Dr. Chakraborty has also contributed to critical national health initiatives. After completing his MD, he joined the Project Management Unit for PM-ABHIM, at ICMR headquarters focusing on planning and implementation of research for One Health, Pandemic Preparedness, and Zoonotic Diseases.

Before joining IIHMR Delhi, he served as an Assistant Professor at the IIHMR University, Jaipur, taught and mentored national and international students, and was involved in Public Health research. Through his career, Dr. Chakraborty has dedicated himself to mastering the art, commerce, and science of public health through a mixed bag of experiential learning and formal academic qualifications.
